Do I need previous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or martial arts experience to begin?
No. Gracie Barra Glendale welcomes complete beginners as well as experienced martial artists. Adult beginners typically start in GB1, where instructors teach the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, practical self-defense, takedowns, escapes, control positions, and submissions in a structured learning environment. The academy’s instructors adapt their coaching to each student’s current experience, skills, and goals.
Do I need to be in shape before starting Jiu-Jitsu?
No. You can begin at your current fitness level. Gracie Barra Glendale offers classes for beginners through advanced practitioners, and training is designed to help students gradually improve their strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, endurance, coordination, and overall well-being. Consistent training will help you become more comfortable and physically capable over time.

For adults who are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, GB1 is the recommended starting point because it focuses on fundamentals and practical self-defense. GB2 introduces more advanced Gi and No-Gi techniques, drills, transitions, and sparring.
